Mumbai: In a special drive against deliverymen on two-wheelers, the Mumbai Traffic Police issued over 1,400 challans for traffic violations and registered 11 FIRs in the span of a week. The drive was conducted from Oct 28 to Nov 4. During this period, the police also seized 17 vehicles. The action was carried out after repeated complaints of deliverymen flouting rules and riding rashly, riding on footpaths or riding in the wrong direction.
Last year, police held meetings with online platforms, urging them to establish clear communication with their rider-partners and share information on blacklisted riders with other companies to prevent them from being rehired. Police have also been urging online platforms to take strong action against offenders such as deducting incentives.
Transport experts argued that hyper-competitive delivery deadlines imposed by online platforms fuel lawlessness. “There is tremendous pressure on delivery personnel to meet ‘10-minute delivery’ deadlines set by online platforms,” said an expert.
Overall, the traffic police have issued over 6.2 lakh challans to two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets and issued fines up to Rs 61 crore between Jan and Oct this year. Besides this, over 35,000 challans have been issued to those riding triple seat and fines up to Rs 3 crore have been issued in the same period.
