Community guidelines

How we expect people to behave here.

iamcity is a city noticeboard, not a social network and not a dating app. People come here to find a room, a job, somewhere to eat, or an answer about Surat. These rules exist so that stays true.

Version 2026-08-30. Breaking these rules can get your content removed or your account suspended.

What is not allowed

These apply everywhere: your profile, your posts, and your private messages.

  • Harassment. Repeated unwanted contact, insults, threats, or pressuring someone after they have said no or declined your request.
  • Sexual content and solicitation. Nudity, sexual content, or using iamcity to solicit sex or sexual services. This is not a dating platform and never will be.
  • Anything involving a minor. Sexual content involving under-18s, grooming, or asking a minor for personal details. We report this to the authorities.
  • Hate. Attacking people for their religion, caste, region, language, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.
  • Violence. Threats, incitement, or celebrating harm to a person or a place.
  • Scams and spam. Fake offers, advance-fee schemes, investment or loan bait, bulk unsolicited messages, or repeating the same message to many people.
  • Impersonation. Pretending to be another person, a business you do not run, a government office, or iamcity staff.
  • Other people's private information. Someone's home address, phone number, ID documents, or photographs of them posted without their consent.
  • Illegal goods and services. Drugs, weapons, stolen property, forged documents, or anything else the law prohibits.

How messages work

You cannot message a stranger out of the blue. You send a message request carrying one message, and they choose to accept, decline, or block. Until they accept, you cannot send anything else.

  • One message, then wait. The request carries a single message so the other person can judge it. Sending more is not possible until they accept.
  • Declining is silent. If someone declines you, they are not told you were told. You can send one more request after 30 days.
  • Contact details are held back. Phone numbers, emails and links in a request are held until someone accepts. Sharing a number afterwards is your choice.
  • 18 and over. Direct messages require you to confirm you are 18 or over and to accept these rules. We do not display your date of birth to anyone.

Reporting

Every profile, message and conversation has a Report action, in the app and on the website. You can report these things:

  • Spam or scam
  • Harassment or bullying
  • Sexual or explicit content
  • Hate speech
  • Violence or threats
  • Impersonation
  • Concerns a minor
  • Something else

When you report something we take a copy of it at that moment, so the evidence survives even if the other person deletes it. We do not tell them who reported.

What we promise, and what we don't. Our team reads every report, and reports about safety, threats and minors are looked at before anything else. We act on reports of objectionable content within 24 hours: it is removed, and repeat or serious offenders are ejected. For everything else, a question about a listing or a disagreement between two people, we do not promise a turnaround, and we would rather say so than give you a number we cannot keep. If something is urgent, block first and report second, and see the emergency note at the bottom of this page.

Blocking and muting

  • Blocking is mutual and immediate. A blocked person cannot find you, see your profile, open a request, or send into an existing conversation. You disappear from their view too.
  • They are not told. We never notify someone that they were blocked.
  • Muting is quieter. Muting stops notifications from someone without hiding the conversation or telling them anything.
  • You can undo a block. Unblocking lets them find you again. It does not reopen the conversation they were removed from.

What happens when a rule is broken

Depending on what happened, we may:

  • Remove the content. A post, a profile field, or a photo.
  • Turn off messaging for that account. They keep their profile and can still use the rest of iamcity.
  • Suspend the account. The profile disappears from everyone else's view immediately.
  • Report it to the authorities. Where there is a credible threat to someone's safety, or where a minor is involved.

Every moderation action is recorded with who took it and why. Deleting your account does not erase reports made about you; see the privacy section below.

Appeals

If we removed your content or suspended your account and you think we got it wrong, email iamsuratcity@gmail.com from the address on your account and tell us what happened. We add your note to the record and a person looks at it again. We will tell you the outcome. As with reports, we are not going to promise you a turnaround time we cannot keep.

Your privacy

  • Your phone number and email are never shown. They are not part of your public profile, and no screen in the app or on the site can display them to another member.
  • Area only, never an address. Your profile shows a broad area like Adajan or Vesu, and only if you choose to show it. We do not store or display a street or a map pin for a member.
  • Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. They are stored on our servers. Our moderation team can read a conversation when it is reported. We are telling you this plainly rather than implying a privacy we do not provide.
  • You control who sees you. Your profile can be visible to anyone, to signed-in members only, or to nobody. You choose who may send you a message request.
  • Deleting your account. Removes your profile, your conversations, your photos, your blocks and your settings. Reports made about you are kept with your name removed, because otherwise deleting and re-registering would be a way to escape a complaint.

Full detail in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. You can delete your account at any time from this page or from Profile in the app.

Photos in messages

Photo attachments are currently switched off. When they are on, an uploaded photo is not shown to the person you sent it to until it has been reviewed. You will see your own photo immediately; they will not.
