The Mumbai suburban railway network could gradually transition to fully air-conditioned (AC) trains, with the move depending on commuter response, affordability and a decision on fare structures by the state and central government,” Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) Chairman and Managing Director Vilas Wadekar said.
Speaking at a Diwali gathering, Wadekar outlined the expansion and modernisation plans under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3B and MUTP 4, highlighting improved connectivity, passenger safety and multimodal integration as key priorities.
Wadekar said, “The proposed transition to AC trains would initially involve a 50:50 mix of AC and non-AC services, with the long-term objective of converting the entire fleet. Affordable fares would be crucial to securing commuter acceptance.”
Regarding closed-door trains, Wadekar said, “Closing doors on trains could significantly reduce fatalities caused by passengers falling onto railway tracks. Station upgrades, including escalators, elevators, foot overbridges and improved platform connectivity, would also discourage dangerous track crossings and support the railway's Mission Zero Death objective.”
