SURAT : Surat’s claim to the country’s cleanest-city crown is facing an embarrassing test as piles of highly flammable hotfix plastic waste continue to accumulate in residential areas and on open plots. With Swachhata Survekshan underway, Varachha BJP MLA Kumar Kanani has launched a sharp attack on the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), accusing its administration of ignoring repeated warnings and failing to establish a proper waste-disposal system.
Kanani warned that the city could lose its coveted No. 1 position if the civic authorities failed to act decisively against the growing menace. He alleged that waste from the hotfix industry was being dumped in public spaces and frequently catching fire, putting residents’ health and safety at risk.
The Swachhata Survekshan is currently underway, and Surat holds the number one position for cleanliness. However, the situation regarding hotfix plastic waste puts this ranking at risk. Piles of waste are visible everywhere, and incidents of fires are occurring,” Kanani said.
