Police in Surat have registered an FIR against former Surat Municipal Corporation councillor Aslam Cyclewala and his son Sohel after a Gujarat High Court order directed action on allegations of threats, pressure to withdraw a complaint and caste-based abuse.
The case was registered by Salabatpura police on Wednesday against the two men under provisions relating to criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, along with offences under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
According to the complaint cited in the report, Lata Gawane, 59, a resident of Salabatpura, alleged that eight members of the Chiya Gang attacked her grandson, Raj alias Guddu, with bladed weapons during an altercation late on July 13. Gawane said she injured her hand while attempting to intervene. She subsequently filed a complaint with Salabatpura police alleging attempt to murder and offences under the Atrocities Act.
