Ahmedabad 4th in India’s district court pendency; Surat 80th

Ahmedabad ranks fourth in the country for district court case pendency with about 3.6 lakh pending matters, a national-level review has found. Surat, ranked 80th with around 1.3 lakh pending cases, is the other Gujarat district among the 100 judicial districts identified as ‘hotspots’ by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Govt of India.

Following the Ministry’s directives, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) will work with the Ahmedabad and Surat district courts to identify bottlenecks and analyse reasons for delays, officials said, as part of a nationwide, research-based mission to reduce pendency in district and subordinate courts.

According to available data, the top five districts include three from Uttar Pradesh and one each from West Bengal and Gujarat. Judiciary dashboard data shows that about 5% of Ahmedabad district’s pending cases are older than 10 years, while about 10% have been pending for five to 10 years.
