Surat: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 27-year-old man within hours of a murder at Surat railway station, where a 47-year-old man was allegedly bludgeoned to death with a hard plastic pipe near platform 4.
The victim, Nitin Thakkar, a native of Nashik in Maharashtra, was found dead near the Utran-side end of the platform before 1pm on Oct 28. He had sustained multiple injuries to his head and other parts of the body. He was taken to hospital, where a postmortem examination indicated that he had died from multiple injuries caused by a blunt object.
After registering a murder case, the railway police examined CCTV footage and questioned witnesses and people living in the vicinity of the crime scene.
GRP inspector JB Mithapara told TOI that the suspect was identified as Akash Dayama alias Jadiyo (27), who worked at a food stall at the railway station owned by his father-in-law. Police arrested him from the station’s washing yard, where he was allegedly hiding. Dayama lives in the Bharathana area of Kosad in Surat.
He told police that he suspected the victim of stealing his mobile phone. Following this, he beat the victim with a hard plastic pipe, which resulted in his death,” Mithapara said.
