Surat witnessed chaos late Wednesday night when a speeding Scorpio allegedly hit 10 to 15 vehicles near Pushpak Society in Palanpur Patiya amid the Diwali shopping rush. The driver, identified as Yash Rathod, son of BJP leader Niriksha Atul Rathod, was caught by locals while attempting to flee and handed over to police.
Niriksha is the chairperson of the Justice Committee of Olpad Taluka Panchayat. According to police, the incident occurred when Yash was allegedly racing with another car. Eyewitnesses suspected that the two vehicles were speeding when a truck ahead slowed down, causing Yash to lose control of his Scorpio.
The car hit several parked vehicles across a 40-metre stretch, causing heavy damage. However, no major casualties were reported. Adajan police said Yash, who runs a grocery shop in Olpad, had travelled around 40 km to Surat to meet a friend. Both allegedly consumed alcohol at the friend’s house before leaving in the car.
Police have registered a case against Yash and are collecting CCTV footage to investigate the accident and establish the other driver’s role.
