Residents across Surat are grappling with contaminated yellow tap water, triggering widespread health concerns and mounting political pressure on the municipal administration. While ruling party corporators trade arguments over the root cause, a fresh debate has erupted after a senior BJP corporator attributed the crisis to global climate phenomena, El Niño, rather than civic administrative failure.
The issue came to the forefront during a general board meeting of the Surat Municipal Corporation. BJP corporator Vrajesh Unadkat raised concerns regarding persistent supplies of discoloured, foul-smelling water in his ward and across multiple city zones, specifically urging authorities to resolve the crisis ahead of the Diwali festival to spare the civic body from public backlash. Additional complaints poured in from corporators representing various zones, exposing glaring vulnerabilities in the city's water distribution and filtration network, particularly within the Rander zone.
Stepping into the controversy, BJP corporator Urvashi Patel sought to defend the civic administration through a social media statement. Patel acknowledged the legitimacy of public grievances regarding yellow water supplies and the subsequent threat of waterborne diseases across Athwa and Rander. However, she deflected accountability by claiming that the crisis is entirely natural rather than man-made.
