A day after the Supreme Court initiated contempt of court proceedings against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and ordered an immediate freeze on her November salary over the failure to clear encroachments from government land, the civic body on Wednesday carried out a demolition drive on a plot reserved for a BEST bus station in Borivali East.
The BMC completed its encroachment removal operation on a 3,400-square-metre plot along Swami Vivekanand Road, demolishing all 27 commercial shops that had come up on the reserved land. The plot, bearing Survey No. 7B and CTS No. 15, is earmarked for a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus station under Town Planning Scheme-II.
The drive began on Wednesday morning and was carried out by the BMC’s R Central Ward. A team of engineers, along with around 70 workers and civic staff, was deployed for the operation. Two JCB machines and four dumpers were used to bring down the unauthorised commercial structures, while police personnel were present to maintain law and order.
The encroached land measures approximately 3,400 square metres and falls under the BMC’s R Central Ward jurisdiction.
