Western Railway has recovered Rs 138.05 crore in fines after detecting 17.93 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel and unbooked luggage across its network between April and October 2026, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The enforcement action covered Mumbai suburban local trains, long-distance Mail and Express services, passenger trains and holiday special trains. Western Railway said the drives were conducted to prevent revenue losses and encourage passengers to travel with valid tickets.
The railway reported that 2.44 lakh passengers were caught travelling without valid tickets or with irregular tickets in October alone. Fines totalling Rs 21.53 crore were recovered during the month, according to the statement.
Mumbai’s suburban network accounted for 6.28 lakh cases between April and October. These checks resulted in the recovery of approximately Rs 36 crore in fines, highlighting the scale of ticketing violations on one of the city’s most heavily used public transport systems.
Western Railway also reported a sharp increase in unauthorised travel on Mumbai’s air-conditioned suburban services. Around 1.13 lakh cases were detected on AC local trains during the seven-month period, representing an increase of more than 82 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.
