Valsad promotes drumstick farming: ST-SC farmers get saplings at ₹5; others get them for ₹10 with Horticult

At the fruit nursery in Chanvai, farmers from Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) will receive saplings at a rate of Rs. 5 per plant. For General and Other Backwards Class (OBC) farmers, the rate has been set at Rs. 10 per plant. Saplings will be prepared according to the farmers' demand and orders.

According to the Horticulture Department, the PKM-1 variety of drumstick has high production capacity and strong disease resistance. Production can begin within 6 to 10 months of planting. There is a good market demand for drumstick leaves, flowers, pods, and powder, making it an attractive option for farmers.

To avail the benefits of this scheme, farmers must submit a copy of their Village Form No. 8-A and Aadhaar card along with their application. It is mandatory for ST or SC category farmers to also provide their respective caste certificates.

Farmers interested in obtaining saplings can contact the Fruit Nursery, Chanvai, opposite Primary Health Centre, Chanvai-Rankoda Road, Taluka-District Valsad. The nursery will remain operational from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The nursery will remain closed on public holidays and Sundays.

This initiative by the Horticulture Department is expected to increase the area under drumstick cultivation in Valsad district, and saplings will be made available to farmers at a low cost.
