Thousands of Surat embroidery workers strike over Sunday holiday: Work halted in 3 major industrial areas
Reported by Bhaskar English
The protest was triggered by long-standing resentment among workers who say they do not receive a regular weekly holiday, leaving them physically and mentally exhausted from continuous work.
Workers gathered at Amroli Anjani Industries, Katargam GIDC and Sachin GIDC and switched off embroidery machines as part of the protest.
Protestors said, “Workers in other sectors receive a weekly holiday, while embroidery workers are expected to continue working without a regular day off.” They demanded that Sunday be declared a mandatory weekly holiday.
The protesting workers said they would not resume work until the association or factory owners issue a written assurance on the Sunday holiday.
With thousands of workers joining the agitation, the strike could affect textile and embroidery production across Surat.
