Despite weak demand for finished fabric in the domestic market, polyester yarn prices have risen sharply.

Weavers say the sudden increase in yarn prices, coupled with raw-material shortages, has severely affected production in Surat. Daily fabric output has fallen from around 6.5 crore metres to just 2.5-3 crore metres.

Amid the worsening situation, the Chamber of Commerce has written to Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh, seeking immediate relief through customs duty concessions.

He alleged, “Yarn manufacturers were operating like a cartel and putting pressure on the weaving sector. Despite the sharp rise in yarn costs, the price of finished fabric has increased by less than ₹10, leaving weavers struggling with shrinking margins.”
