Surat Spending Big, Gujarat Leading India’s Next Consumer

Reported by Gujarat Samachar

Surat is emerging as India’s new spending hub , with the Gujarat city recording the country’s largest consumption market outside the six megacities, according to the The Many Urban Indias report. The findings underline a broader shift in India’s consumer economy, with Gujarat’s Surat, Ahmedabad and Vadodara among the cities driving the rise of high-spending urban India.

The report by PRICE-Tata Sons places Surat among 19 fast-growing ‘Boomtowns’ , alongside Ahmedabad and Vadodara. These cities are emerging as major centres of income generation, consumption and household savings beyond India's traditional metropolitan giants.

Surat stands out particularly strongly. With a population approaching that of a Big Six city and a large young population, it has the largest consumption market in India outside the six megacities . Its average household consumption is also higher than Bengaluru's, according to the report.

The city's expanding middle- and high-income households are being driven by its textile industry, diamond trade and migrant upward mobility , giving Surat a distinctive position in India's changing consumption landscape.
