Patil said, “Capturing rainwater and recharging groundwater at the place where it falls is the need of the hour. Under the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, more than 1.55 crore water conservation structures have been created across the country, enabling annual groundwater recharge of over 12 BCM.”
He added that groundwater recharge is the best way to repay the debt owed to Mother Earth for extracting groundwater. Around 6,000 recharge structures are already operational in Surat. The new 151 borewells are expected to help raise groundwater levels and improve water quality.
To prevent rainwater from flowing away, recharge groundwater, reduce dependence on the Tapi river and minimise flooding and waterlogging caused by creeks, the Surat Municipal Corporation has prepared 10,969 groundwater recharge systems under the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign.
More than 6,000 structures, including borewell recharge systems and recharge pits, were constructed during the previous phase. The municipal corporation has prepared 12 different designs based on location requirements.
Surat ranks first in Gujarat and sixth in the country for water conservation. The city has also received the ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari’ award.
