A third-year Anatomy resident doctor at Surat’s New Civil Hospital died by suicide on Thursday, marking the second such case at the hospital in about six weeks.
According to reports, Dr Prajapati died after cutting his wrist with a sharp object. Hospital staff and police reached the spot after the incident was reported.
Police have registered an accidental death case and started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident has raised concern within the hospital administration and the medical community as it comes roughly six weeks after another resident doctor died by suicide at the same institution.
In August, first-year postgraduate student Dr Harsh Pandya was found dead in his hostel room at New Civil Hospital. An anti-ragging inquiry later found allegations of verbal abuse and humiliation involving four senior resident doctors, who were suspended for six months. Police subsequently registered a case against the four doctors over alleged harassment and wrongful confinement.
