Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has sealed around 52 properties in the Katargam area of Surat after detecting unauthorised ‘Tapela’ dyeing activities and the discharge of chemical-laden wastewater into the drainage system.
During an on-site inspection of properties located in Town Planning (T.P.) Scheme No. 24 (Tunki) in the North Zone (Katargam), civic officials found that ‘Tapela’ dyeing activities were being carried out without authorisation.
The inspection also revealed that wastewater containing dyes and chemicals used in the process was being discharged into the drainage system. According to the civic body, the wastewater mixed with potable water lines, contaminating the drinking water supply and posing a health risk to residents.
Following complaints from local residents, the SMC issued notices under Section 268 of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations (BPMC) Act, 1949, to the properties involved. The notices directed the occupants to stop the unauthorised activities, remove the operations or face the sealing of their premises.
As the stipulated deadline for compliance had expired, the civic body proceeded to seal approximately 52 properties.
