SURAT: While Surat residents grapple with potholes, poor civic infrastructure and mounting inflation, the ruling BJP’s elected wing in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has landed in a...
According to the purchase details, the SMC procured more than 131 kg of bhajiyas at ₹750 per kg, taking the expenditure on the snack alone beyond ₹1 lakh. Despite the bulk order, the civic administration reportedly managed a discount of just ₹50 per kg from the vendor’s quoted price of ₹800.
Interestingly, the expenditure on Surat’s iconic festive delicacy, Ghari, was approximately ₹20,000, making the bhajiya bill nearly five times higher.
The refreshments were arranged during a general body meeting held ahead of Diwali and Chandi Padvo, catering to around 350-400 people, including corporators, officials, journalists and other staff.
Defending the expenditure, Surat Mayor Mayaben Mavani said quality and public health were prioritised over cheaper alternatives.
