Acting on a tip-off, a team led by PI L.D. Odedra raided an iron cabin on the Palsana-Sachin Highway and allegedly found ganja being sold at the spot.
Police arrested 39-year-old Shantanu alias Bengali, originally from West Bengal, and seized 236 grams of ganja, a mobile phone, cash and other items worth a total of ₹17,230.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly purchased 700 grams of ganja at wholesale rates from an unidentified supplier near the railway tracks in Surat’s Ashwinikumar area four to five days before the raid.
Police suspect that ganja consignments may be arriving by train from other states and reaching the Ashwinikumar area through the railway network. From there, the stock is allegedly being supplied to retail sellers operating in industrial and rural areas of the district.
Police have declared the unidentified supplier from Ashwinikumar wanted and launched a search for him.
