Gujarat has emerged as India’s largest source of new stock market investors, surpassing long-time leader Uttar Pradesh following a massive surge in retail sign-ups.
Data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) September 2026 Market Pulse report reveals Gujarat added 2.3 lakh new investors in August 2026 alone. The figure marks a 94.8% month-on-month jump from July and a 134.9% year-on-year increase compared to August 2025.
The dramatic surge allowed Gujarat to capture 14.6% of all new investor registrations nationwide in August. Uttar Pradesh, which traditionally dominated retail onboarding due to its large population base, slipped to second place with 2.0 lakh additions (12.9%), followed by Maharashtra at 1.6 lakh additions (10.2%).
Unlike traditional market expansion that relies heavily on financial hubs like Mumbai or Delhi-NCR, Gujarat's growth spans across regional hubs. Five districts from the state placed directly inside the national top 10 for new additions in August:
Another five districts—Mahesana, Vadodara, Banaskantha, Surendranagar, and Jamnagar—placed within the national top 20. The top 10 districts nationwide accounted for 16% of August’s 15.5 lakh new registrations, while the top 50 districts accounted for 34.5%.
