An alleged land dispute led a man to travel from Surat to his village in Samastipur, where police say he killed his father and tried to mislead investigators.
A farmer, Raghuvir Sahni, was found murdered outside his home in Darba village, under Halai police station limits in Bihar’s Samastipur district, in late July 2026. Police initially registered a case against an unidentified attacker and formed a special investigation team after the first round of inquiries failed to produce clear leads.
WhatsApp Image 2026-08-21 at 10.58.36 AM VTP image Investigators reportedly traced a mobile number belonging to Sahni’s son, Shivshankar Sahni, who was working in Surat, Gujarat. His family and villagers said he was living there, but technical evidence raised questions about his whereabouts around the time of the murder.
Police said Shivshankar had switched off his mobile phone in Surat, allegedly to make it appear that he had remained in Gujarat. However, a call he made to his wife before switching off the phone reportedly provided investigators with a key lead. Call records, tower locations and other technical evidence helped police question his claimed whereabouts. Investigators also examined mobile data collected from the crime scene.
