Surat's highly sensitive Lajpore Central Jail has once again become the centre of controversy and discussion. A 29-year-old prisoner, Rizwan Mohammad Gani Sheikh, who is serving a life sentence for a serious offence under the NDPS Act, suddenly slipped and fell while descending the steps of his barrack early this morning (28 October). He sustained serious injuries to his head and left eye in the accident. The jail premises were thrown into a state of commotion as soon as the prisoner fell.
As soon as they were informed of the incident, police personnel from the jail administration acted swiftly and shifted the injured prisoner to Surat's New Civil Hospital. Doctors on duty provided immediate first aid and admitted him to the prisoner ward.
According to information from hospital sources, Rizwan's condition is currently stable, and he is being kept under continuous medical monitoring. Senior jail officials have also been informed about the incident.
It is noteworthy that Rizwan Sheikh had arrived at Lajpore Jail only four months ago. Before that, he had served four years in prison in Mumbai for a sensational crime involving attempted murder and firing, and several cases have been registered against him.
