HC’s strong remarks on Surat DCP Rajdeepsinh Nakum’s transfer: Says fair probe impossible if he remains

Reported by Bhaskar English

During a suo motu hearing on July 13, the court observed that an impartial investigation would be difficult while DCP Rajdeepsinh Nakum, who was allegedly present during the incident, continued in the same position.

The court therefore directed that the senior officer be immediately transferred from his current post.

The government informed the court that, on the DGP's instructions, the Surat Police Commissioner had assigned the inquiry to the Additional CP (Crime). Statements of people seen in the viral video were also being recorded.

The High Court, however, described this as only a preliminary inquiry. It observed that the DCP was present at the spot and that the viral videos had made the incident difficult to deny.

The court further said subordinate police personnel might not be able to give statements against a senior officer if he continued in the same position.
