Dead Cockroach In Mess Meal Triggers Furious Sit-In

Reported by Gujarat Samachar

Furious residents of the Samras Boys Hostel, located on the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) campus in Surat, staged an aggressive sit-in protest on Tuesday after discovering a dead cockroach served in their mess meal. Stale food and persistent hygiene violations pushed angry students to fling their food plates onto the ground in protest, sparking widespread outrage across the campus premises.

The incident comes shortly after similar complaints regarding poor food quality emerged from the nearby Samras Girls Hostel, raising serious concerns over catering management across state-backed residential facilities housing thousands of students.

As news of the contaminated meal spread across the campus, student activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), led by local leader Shubham Rajput, joined the hostel residents to launch a demonstration against the hostel management and the third-party mess contractor. Protesters gathered in the main courtyard, shouting slogans and demanding immediate administrative action.

Protesting students highlighted that despite previous warnings and formal complaints about substandard food, kitchen contractors have continued serving unhygienic, stale meals. Student representatives warned that if strict legal and administrative action is not taken against those responsible, they will escalate their protest across the university.
