More than 5,000 people, including sadhus, sadhvis and members of various communities, took part in an ‘Ahimsa March’ in Surat on Gandhi Jayanti.
The rally was organised to demand action against alleged illegal slaughterhouses operating in the city. Participants marched from Sargam Shopping Centre in Umarwada to the Collector’s Office and submitted a memorandum to the district administration.
The protesters also demanded that the cow be declared the ‘National Mother’. Religious leaders warned of further protests if action is not taken against alleged illegal slaughterhouses.
