Admin cracks down on toxic Chinese plastic in Surat: Moves to break illegal supply chain from port to cotta
Reported by Bhaskar English
With a large quantity of sub-50-micron plastic being recovered, the civic body is now targeting the entire supply chain, from imports to local users.
The corporation is coordinating with the Customs Department and Port Authority to prevent such plastic from entering Surat.
A significant quantity of plastic measuring less than 50 microns has been found among the banned plastic waste collected across Surat. The discovery has prompted the Municipal Corporation to investigate the wider network supplying and using the material.
Hot-fix work is widely carried out through home-based units in textile and diamond-related areas such as Varachha, Sarthana, Kapodra, Puna and Simada, where the banned plastic is extensively used.
The plastic products imported from China are supplied to local traders before being distributed to home-based industries across Surat. Several tonnes of plastic material are reportedly entering the city every day.
