18-month-old swallows open safety pin while playing: Surat Civil doctors remove 2-cm pin from food pipe wit

The sharp, 2-cm pin became lodged in his food pipe, leaving his family alarmed. Doctors at New Civil Hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department successfully removed it using an endoscopic technique without making any incision.

Ayan, the one-and-a-half-year-old son of Arsad Mohammad Rayan, originally from Bihar and currently living in Bhestan, was playing at home on Monday (24 Aug) morning when he accidentally swallowed an open safety pin lying on the floor.

The child soon began crying continuously and vomiting. After the family realised that he had swallowed the pin, they rushed him to New Civil Hospital for treatment.

An X-ray conducted at the Civil Hospital’s ENT Department showed the open safety pin lodged in the upper section of the food pipe. Doctors immediately started the procedure and used an endoscope and forceps to remove the pin safely within 30-45 minutes.

The same procedure could have cost around ₹50,000-60,000 at a private hospital, but the treatment was provided free of charge at the Civil Hospital.
