The ₹ 178.07 crore Khijadiya-Amreli railway project is progressing in Gujarat, with a 16.76 km metre-gauge line being converted to broad gauge to improve connectivity and enable long-distance train services for Amreli passengers.
The project, sanctioned by the Central Government, includes track laying, civil construction and electrification. Work is underway, although land acquisition issues have affected the pace of construction.
Once the conversion is complete, the upgraded line will connect Khijadiya Junction to the broad-gauge network, opening up improved rail links from Amreli to Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Surat and Mumbai via Botad and Dhola.
Electrification is also part of the project, creating the infrastructure needed to operate electric trains on the route. The conversion is expected to improve travel options for residents who currently have limited access to long-distance rail services.
However, the operation of specific long-distance trains will depend on railway planning and approvals after the infrastructure work is completed.
