The University of California San Diego has retained its title as the No. 1 public research university in the nation, according to Washington Monthly. “America’s Best Colleges for Research,” included in Washington Monthly’s 2026 College Guide and Rankings, highlights the fundamental role research universities play in driving economic growth and advancing human health. UC San Diego also retained its No. 6 ranking among all research universities in the U.S.
Being named the nation’s top public university for research, for a second consecutive year, is a testament to the people who make UC San Diego a place where discovery thrives,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “While federal funding for research remains uncertain, our faculty, students and staff are focused on work that matters — from life-saving medical advances to solutions for our planet’s greatest challenges. This recognition reflects not just the scale of our research enterprise, but our resolve to ensure that knowledge keeps translating into real, lasting impact.”
