A police pursuit that began in Riverside County ended with an officer-involved shooting at the U.S.-Mexico border, prompting a nine-hour closure of the southbound San Ysidro border crossing.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night that deputies located a suspect wanted for grand theft in Jurupa Valley, near Van Buren Boulevard and Clay Street. When the deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect refused to stop, and they began to chase the car, officials said.
The pursuit spanned about 120 miles — beginning in Jurupa Valley and continuing onto westbound Interstate 91, southbound Interstate 15, and ultimately onto Interstate 5. It ended at the San Ysidro-Tijuana border crossing.
The San Diego Police Department said that there was an officer-involved shooting involving agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A police spokesperson said the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m.
A spokesperson for the FBI said its evidence response team responded to the shooting after being requested. She referred questions about the incident to CBP. The agency had not answered questions about the incident by late afternoon.
