The Padres’ farm system continues to pick up the tab for the major league roster. Every offseason and trade deadline brings another opportunity for A.J. Preller to work the phones and another conversation about which young players San Diego can afford to surrender. Eventually, ownership needs to reach for the checkbook before the front office reaches for the prospect list.
This winter should be that point. The Padres need help, and their developmental timeline offers little comfort. AJ Cassavell reports that, beyond Ethan Salas, Tucker Musgrove is the lone top-10 Padres prospect with a chance to contribute in 2027. We can like the talent further down the system, but they still need time, and the major league roster needs support
Their biggest needs are first base and left-handed relief. If Preller is given enough financial flexibility to fill some of them through free agency, the Padres can improve while allowing their remaining prospects to develop.
Most of their trades come with a price that extends well beyond the day they happen. The prospect leaving San Diego might become an affordable regular or help acquire someone else two summers from now. Even a player who never turns into a star can make an expensive roster easier to maintain.
