Padres prospects in the A.J. Preller era usually share a common denominator: Loud tools.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound outfielder not only has two home runs through his eight first games in the Arizona Fall Legue, a 118.2 mph blast on Thursday registered as the fourth-hardest-hit ball since the circuit began using hit-tracking technology, according to Baseball America .
The 24-year-old McCoy ambushed a first-pitch fastball from Rays right-hander Marcus Johnson and redirected over the wall in left, some 435 feet from the plate.
McCoy’s two home runs are tied for the team lead. He is hitting .250/.333/.536 with six RBIs despite a 12-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The former undrafted free agent is coming off his most extensive season of action, as he hit .278/.355/.467 with 19 homers and 71 RBIs over 123 games split between high Single-A Fort Wayne (15 HRs, .821 OPS, 98 games) and Double-A San Antonio (4 HRs, .826 OPS), 25 games).
