Man arrested on suspicion of murder in Crystal Pier security guard shooting

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an unarmed security guard at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, authorities announced. Brian Mathew McColley was arrested Tuesday, nearly a month after 31-year-old Luis Alberto Quiroz-Arreola was shot and killed while working at the pier, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. on Oct. 5 at Crystal Pier in the 4500 block of Ocean Boulevard, police said. Quiroz-Arreola was working as a security guard at the time and was unarmed. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Homicide detectives identified McColley as a person of interest during the investigation.

Police said he also had an outstanding warrant for an unrelated offense. On Tuesday afternoon, members of the department's Special Investigations Unit located McColley in the 300 block of Cedar Street in El Cajon and arrested him on the outstanding warrant. He was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder, in addition to the unrelated warrant.
