A blue wave swept the country Tuesday night, and it hit San Diego as well. Every congressional seat in the county is now Democratic. While Prop. 50 surely had a hand in the matter, but this monochromatic map has been in the works for a while. It wasn’t too far back that three out of these five seats were held by Republicans. Take Scott Peters seat, covering coastal San Diego out to Escondido and San Marcos, which became blue back in 2012. He’s held it ever since, and saw reelection to his eighth term in congress. Only a few years after Peters grab of the 50th district, Mike Levin won the 49th district, which straddles San Diego and Orange counties, after Republican Darrell Issa opted to no longer seat reelection in the district. Levin won reelection yesterday and has held the seat since 2018. That brings us to District 48, which became part of California’s Prop. 50 effort to counter other states’ gerrymandering of districts in anticipation of the midterms. The seat became geographically designed to give Democrats the advantage — and they ended up coming out on top with Marni Von Wilpert as the newly drawn 48th district’s congressional representative.
