The subpoenas show what the federal government is seeking during what experts say is an unprecedented investigation of the American election system.
Five federal grand jury subpoenas obtained by inewsource show a Department of Justice investigation seeking San Diego County voting records escalated over the summer in a series of requests for voting histories, voter registration applications, citizenship attestations and supporting documentation.
The Imperial County registrar of voters told inewsource that she has also received a federal subpoena for voter records and a summons from the Department of Homeland Security this year after having received no subpoenas in the three prior years.
The developments reveal a sweeping investigation into county voter records by Department of Justice prosecutors in Southern California. The local effort coincides with a national effort by the DOJ to force the state of California to comb through its voter rolls for alleged noncitizen voters that culminated in the U.S. attorney general filing a lawsuit against the state on Thursday.
Reporting by the Los Angeles Times and CalMatters has shown that the Central District of California, the federal prosecutors’ office based in L.A., has also sent subpoenas for voter information to county registrars in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
