SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Seven people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a joint DUI checkpoint in Mission Bay over the weekend, authorities said. The checkpoint was conducted by the San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division and California Highway Patrol on Saturday, Oct.
17, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. the next morning at 2600 Ingraham Street. According to SDPD, 799 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with 380 drivers screened and 22 evaluated. The operation resulted in seven DUI-alcohol arrests and seven vehicle impounds. No arrests were made for drug-impaired driving, illegal drug offenses or other criminal charges.
Police said DUI checkpoints are placed in locations where they can have the greatest impact on deterring impaired driving and improving safety for officers and the public. SDPD said additional DUI checkpoints and saturation patrol will be conducted as part of its ongoing effort to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries. The checkpoint was funded through the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
