Mumbai’s metro expansion can improve mobility only if the areas around its stations are planned as complete urban districts rather than treated as isolated transport sites. Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation and Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has argued that coordinated development around metro stations can encourage public transport use, improve daily commuting and support longer-term urban growth.
Speaking at the 19th Urban Mobility India Conference in Bhubaneswar, Bhide linked transport planning with land-use decisions. She was chairing a session on land use and transport beyond city limits, where the discussion focused on aligning urban expansion with public transport networks and improving coordination across administrative boundaries. The emphasis is significant because metro systems do not operate independently of the neighbourhoods they serve. Their usefulness depends on how easily residents can reach stations, what destinations are located nearby and whether housing and employment are connected to the network.
