The Thane railway Police have arrested two women allegedly caught stealing a gold mangalsutra from a passenger at Diva railway station and linked them to two other theft cases, an official statement said on Friday.
Police officials, while probing the matter, recovered five gold mangalsutras weighing 61.15 grams, collectively valued at Rs 7.55 lakh, during the investigation.
The arrests followed a surveillance operation conducted by the railway police's detection squad on October 21, 2026, amid a series of gold chain thefts reported within its jurisdiction, it said.
According to the police, women constables Bharti Phalke and Avantika Surve were deployed on platform number 2 at Diva railway station from 6 am to monitor suspicious activity and identify suspects using CCTV footage and their modus operandi.
At around 7.18 am, as a CSMT-bound slow local train arrived, two women allegedly snatched a gold mangalsutra from a 40-year-old passenger, Kavita Katke, while boarding the general ladies compartment.
