Adani Airports will begin a phased redevelopment of the nearly 60-year-old Terminal 1 at Mumbai airport from January 2027, starting with the North Section of Terminal 1B, citing safety concerns. About 5 million passengers a year, roughly 9 per cent of Mumbai airport's traffic of around 55 million, will be temporarily affected, and airlines may shift services to Navi Mumbai airport. Terminal 1 handles about 15 million passengers annually, and the redevelopment is expected to raise capacity by 33 per cent to 20 million, the company said on Saturday.
