Mumbai Police is strengthening its canine squad with six Belgian Malinois dogs, which will be trained for specialised security assignments ranging from explosive detection to securing venues ahead of VIP visits. Of the six newly inducted dogs, one has completed its training, while the remaining five are undergoing training at the Shivajinagar training centre in Pune.
The dogs are being trained to detect explosives and assist police personnel in security checks at venues, including inspecting bags and rooms and searching open grounds. Ahead of VIP visits, they will help security teams sweep locations for potential threats before the arrival of dignitaries. Their ability to cover areas quickly and respond to commands makes them particularly suited to such demanding assignments.
The Belgian Malinois is a working dog breed known for its agility, stamina, alertness and trainability. These qualities make it suitable for tasks that require sustained physical activity, quick responses and focused detection work. In security operations, specially trained dogs can help identify suspicious substances and objects that may not be immediately apparent during routine checks.
