Mumbai Metro Line 4, planned as a key east-west corridor connecting Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavali in Thane, has taken a step forward with Alstom unveiling the first trainset for Metro Lines 4 and 4A at its manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.
The first of 39 driverless Metropolis trainsets was manufactured in 14 months, according to the company. Alstom will supply the trains, signalling systems and depot equipment, along with five years of maintenance, to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which has been awarded the Integrated Systems Package by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The unveiling marks a key manufacturing milestone for a corridor expected to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern suburbs and the rapidly expanding Thane region. However, the commencement of services will depend on the completion of civil works, systems integration, testing and statutory clearances.
The project brings together manufacturing and engineering facilities across several states. The trainset was designed in Bengaluru and manufactured at Sri City, while its propulsion systems and bogies are sourced from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Savli in Gujarat, respectively.
