The proposed underground local train network between Churchgate and Virar is still at an early stage, with Western Railway awaiting funding approval from the Railway Board before beginning its feasibility study. The project aims to explore a possible underground suburban rail corridor to address the growing pressure on Mumbai’s heavily used local train network.
According to a senior railway official, the construction department is waiting for the necessary financial clearance. Once the funds are approved, Western Railway will initiate the feasibility study to determine whether the underground corridor is technically and economically viable.
If the findings are favourable, the next step will be to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will outline the project's scope, estimated cost and implementation requirements.
The proposal follows a letter dated March 3, 2026, inviting submissions for the conceptualisation and feasibility study (FLS) of an underground local train network between Churchgate and Virar.
The matter was also discussed during the Railway Minister’s visit to Ahmedabad. However, the immediate priority remains assessing the project's feasibility before moving towards detailed planning or construction.
