Amid growing concerns over deteriorating air quality in Mumbai , the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC ) has intensified its action against construction sites violating dust-control and air pollution guidelines. In October, the civic body issued stop-work notices to 44 construction sites and show-cause notices to 428 others for failing to comply with prescribed pollution-control measures.
Air quality in Mumbai has been deteriorating since the withdrawal of the monsoon, with dust and construction-related activities contributing to rising pollution levels. To address the situation, the BMC has stepped up enforcement of its air pollution control guidelines.
In 2024, the civic body introduced a set of guidelines comprising 28 measures to control dust and reduce air pollution at construction sites. The administration has directed all concerned agencies and developers to strictly implement these measures.
However, several construction sites have reportedly continued to violate the prescribed norms, prompting the civic body to initiate action against erring developers.
According to BMC data, 44 construction projects were issued stop-work notices in October, while 428 projects received show-cause notices. The highest number of stop-work notices, nine was issued in the K-South ward, followed by eight notices in the R-Central ward.
