Around 200 people participated in the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Satyagraha’, organised by civil society group Hum Bharat Ke Log outside the BMC headquarters on Sunday, protesting against alleged electoral malpractice and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest was called by activist Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, who could not attend as he was unwell. However, Ali Bhojani of Hum Bharat Ke Log alleged that police personnel had been stationed outside Gandhi’s residence since morning, preventing him from joining the demonstration.
Fifteen to 20 policemen had been stationed at his residence since morning. They were outside his house, inside the society in plain clothes, and even near the corner outside the society, where police vehicles were parked. He is not keeping well, which is why he could not make it today,” Bhojani said.
Earlier, Gandhi had alleged in a social media post that police from three South Mumbai police stations had called to warn him against undertaking a march with the national flag and Constitution. He later posted on X that he would leave to offer satyagraha at 2.30 pm.
