Reported by Mumbai Mirror
Mumbai Traffic Police have registered around 1,800 criminal cases against wrong-side drivers and sought suspension of 350 driving licences as part of an intensified citywide crackdown that has recorded 35,777 actions till October 13.
The latest figure marks a rise of more than 7,100 actions in barely a month. When Mumbai Mirror reported on the enforcement drive on September 9, traffic police had booked 28,600 motorists for wrong-side driving in 2026.
Officials said traffic police are currently taking action against around 1,100 to 1,200 wrong-side violators every day. Despite repeated drives, fines and criminal action, the practice of taking shortcuts through one-way roads, narrow lanes and against the flow of traffic remains widespread.
The scale of enforcement this year is significantly higher than in the previous two years. Mumbai Traffic Police took 12,794 actions against wrong-side motorists in 2024 and 11,711 in 2025, a combined total of 24,505. This year’s count has already crossed 35,000, with more than two months remaining.
