The Maharashtra government has declared Monday, November 9, 2026, an additional local holiday for state government and semi-government offices in Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts. The decision gives eligible employees an extended Diwali break, as the holiday falls between Lakshmi Pujan on Sunday, November 8, and Bali Pratipada on Tuesday, November 10.
The announcement was made through a circular issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on November 6, according to a Mint report. The additional holiday will be over and above the existing public holidays.
Holiday between two Diwali festivalsThe additional holiday falls between two important Diwali observances. Lakshmi Pujan will be celebrated on Sunday, November 8, while Bali Pratipada will be observed on Tuesday, November 10. With November 9 declared a holiday, eligible employees will get three consecutive days off. The decision comes as Lakshmi Pujan falls on a Sunday this year.
Holiday limited to Mumbai government officesThe government has clarified that the additional holiday is applicable only to specified state government and semi-government offices in Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts. It is not a statewide holiday and does not automatically apply to government offices in other districts of Maharashtra. Private companies and their employees are also not covered by this announcement.
