The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC ) has announced an ambitious plan to tackle the problem of garbage being dumped into drains across Mumbai. The civic body plans to spend approximately ₹300 crore on installing iron nets over major drains across the city.
According to the BMC, these nets will help prevent people from dumping waste into drains and reduce the cost of drain cleaning by nearly 50 per cent. However, corporators have raised concerns over the quality of the actual drain-cleaning work and questioned the role of contractors.
Raising concerns over the drain-cleaning process, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator Yamini Jadhav levelled serious allegations against contractors. She claimed that contractors merely construct ramps to lower machinery into drains, while the actual cleaning work is carried out by workers.
She further alleged that despite repeated complaints from residents, several major drains across Mumbai remain inadequately cleaned.
BJP corporator Harish Bhandirge also supported these concerns, stating that an inspection conducted even today would reveal several drains that remain clogged and overflowing.
