Mumbai ’s public transport network is set to receive a major boost with the induction of new electric buses equipped with advanced Blade Battery technology. Nine buses arrived at the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport ( BEST ) undertaking’s Magathane depot on Saturday, October 10, while another 49 are expected to be delivered within a week.
The addition of 58 new electric buses is expected to take BEST’s fleet closer to 2,900, strengthening the city’s public transport services and improving connectivity between South Mumbai, the suburbs and Navi Mumbai.
According to reports, the first batch of 25 buses is expected to become operational by the end of October. The remaining buses are expected to join the fleet in phases as deliveries progress.
A senior BEST official said the undertaking currently operates more than 2,800 buses and expects the new additions to push the fleet beyond 2,900. The new vehicles will primarily serve longer-distance routes connecting South Mumbai with suburban areas, along with selected services between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
One of the key advantages of the new buses is their expected driving range. Media reports indicate that the vehicles could cover approximately 325 km to 500 km on a single charge, compared with around 250 km for existing electric buses in BEST’s fleet.
