Delhi Police detained Congress MP Imran Masood and Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi as they stood with Jamia Millia Islamia students protesting for the restoration of their student union, amid a tightening crackdown on campus.
Delhi Police on Friday detained Congress MP Imran Masood after he joined the students' protest at Jamia Millia Islamia demanding the restoration of the student union.
I can even give my life for my children. These are my children and the future of my country. Attempts are being made to crush their rights. The students have been expelled from the university. Why is the student union not being restored? What exactly is the reason that you do not want to reinstate the student union?" Masood said.
Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi also alleged that the police detained him while he was on his way to meet the protesting students on campus.
The Rampur MP told PTI news agency that the police pushed and manhandled him before detaining him as he raised his voice for the rights of the students. He said that, as a Jamia alumnus, it was his duty to stand with the students. Nadvi was later released.
